Nestled on the eastern foothills of Table Mountain's Newland Forest, lies the picturesque suburb of Newlands, one of South Africa's oldest and most highly valued neighbourhoods. First named De Nieuwe Land under the Dutch rule of the early 1700's, the fertile soil and abundant water supplied by mountain streams, provided the perfect ground to grow and supply vegetables for passing ships. The area remained the property of the Dutch East India Company and included a gracious residence for high-ranking company until officials. In 1826 Newlands expanded and began to develop into the popular suburb that it is today.
The area is also home to Newlands Brewery. As the oldest commercial brewery in South Africa, its story began on the banks of the Liesbeek River where Pieter Visagie was granted the first brewing license in 1658.
Today, Newlands is arguably one of the most beautiful suburbs in Cape Town. It includes only the best homes, schools and sporting facilities. Its quiet, tree-lined streets have given it a quaint, village feeling, while the mountain and forest add a magical touch to the diverse and charming neighbourhood.
